I had a follow-up assessment / skillset test today at a company I interviewed for two weeks ago (my contact there finally got back with me late last week). It did NOT go well. I'd even go so far as to call it an EPIC FAILURE. See, I am trained extensively in Microsoft Office Suite 2007 & 2010. Emphasis on Access, Excel and Sharepoint. I would even consider myself an Access whiz. I was told the assessment would be given in Access and Excel, so I was stoked. I even went to Barnes & Noble last night to thumb through some Access and Excel books just as a refresher. (I haven't worked with them in three plus months now, after all.) I felt good going into this today as I pretty much knew the content of the books from cover-to-cover. So, I got there and the lady who interviewed me gave the intstruction sheet which basically said to take two files and create a database, get certain info and then summarize it into a report. Okay, good as done! Then... I turned on the PC to find ACCESS and EXCEL 2003. Now, for those of you unfamiliar with the Microsoft Office Suite of products, 2007 and 2010 are very similar. The 2000 and 2003 versions are also very similar. However, 2003 and 2007 are WORLDS APART. I never even used 2003 - I trained on 2007. Needless to say, I was taken aback. Completely thrown off my game. Totally lost. I said to my husband later, "This is like if I knew fluent Spanish, was told that I'd be testing in Spanish only to show up and have the test be in Russian." The kicker, though, folks? The company uses 2010. They haven't used 2003 in years - in fact, the testing PCs are the only ones still using 2003! So BASICALLY I was being "assessed" on my skills at using OUTDATED software that the company itself did not use for real work. DOUBLE-YOU TEE EFF. It took me TWO AND A HALF HOURS to work up this results set and I couldn't even finish it! Totally, completely, appalling. Embarrassing. Ridiculous. I was LIVID when I left out of there. The whole situation is SO stupid. So to modify my above statement to my husband, not only was it like I was under the impression I'd be testing in Spanish, the company itself speaks Spanish, but the test was in Russian! I just do not get it. Unfair much? Someone else was coming in after me to take the same test - and if by some chance that person is all schooled in 2003 they will blow me out of the water. Even though it is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT to the actual WORK that this company does. I hate to think that my chances at this position are diminished because I don't know how to use software that the company doesn't even use. How stupid is that?! Anyway. I don't really want the job ANYWAY because they wear JEANS to work which is SO LAME.
Okay, maybe I'm still more upset about this than I thought I was. Deeeep breath.

Check out this adorable boucle jacket I scored for $8 off a Best Price rack at JCP the week before last!

...and one without the jacket. I just wanted to show off this top - I love a sleeveless shirt that has nice, thick straps that cover up the ole' bra, don't you?

I need a haircut. Shoot, I need a hairstyle. I hate it right now - I got it cut last about six weeks ago and I don't think my stylist went short enough. Additionally, I HATE the color of it currently. It either needs to be lighter or darker, not this weird in between shade of blah. I can't believe that it has been 11 months since I last lightened it and there's still so much blonde in it! I may as well go back blonde again - what do you think? I miss it. I decided to grow it back out brunette for a change and I am over it already. I think a re-blondening is in the cards in the not-too-distant-future!
Off to investigate... my oldest son has been in the bathroom for about ten minutes and that is never, ever a good sign. Wait - he just yelled, "HEY MOM MAYBE ONE DAY I CAN BE A NATURE DETECTIVE?" God only knows what that child is doing in there! Wish me luck.
That is SO frustrating! I know the differences between 2003 and 2007 are huge, it's really difficult to go back and forth.
ReplyDeleteAt least you have a cute outfit! :-)
wow. I would be miffed too. Can you call them up and bring them to task on that and ask them to let you do it in current software?
ReplyDeleteLove that jacket. Now I need to go look for one. LOL
oh my...I am not sure I really even want to know what you found your son doing, boys get into some of the weirdist crap! Sorry today sucked, but at least you looked good! The unemployed thing just ruins everything!!
ReplyDeleteAdorable trousers, I love the Limited pants. I also love the emerald color. Maybe a pretty caramel blond for summer?
ReplyDeleteOmg, 2003 and 2007/2010 are WORLDS apart. I knew 2003 in and out but had to upgrade for my Microsoft CIS class for my degree. I had no idea how to do anything and still struggle to use the programs even after learning them. I'd send a well-worded email to whomever does the hiring.
Thats incredibly stressful! And stupid that you didn't get tested on what they actually use. But, I love your outfit, and want that jacket and tank!!!! Hope you have a good rest of the day!

This outfit is so business chic! You look great. Sorry to hear about the assessment, but you did look awesome while taking it. :) I hope it turns out better than you think.

On the bright side, you look terrific.
ReplyDeleteMicrosoft 2003? You're right, completely different set up and user interface. It wasn't until the 2007 version that I could say *I* had mad skillz, and I'm a paralegal. I'm one of those poor legal staffers who used Word Perfect like a concert pianist, was forced to switch to Word with the 2003 version, took its name in vain with every other breath, and then fell in love with the update. You were wronged.
OMG I am totally pissed FOR you, girl! That is ridiculous! You do look lovely though...silver lining ;) Keep your head up!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your assessment. Did you have a chance to air your complaints to anyone (at the company)? If not, I really think you should send them a "friendly" letter at some point. If not, then might as well at least enjoy how good you look in that shade of green! :)
ReplyDeleteSo stupid is right! Brother. I do love that jacket though! I need to stop by jcp! I had a Taylor inspired outfit all geared up for today but now my internet is out!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like typical management type stuff. I keep getting turned for jobs where I work, where I'm trying to transfer; the last email said "We regret to inform you that you do not have enough experience." I've worked for YOU for eleven years...please explain to me how that's not enough when the skill set only asks for two years? I'm about to give up.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is redonk about your test! However, I'm jealous of your Office 2007 skills - my company finally upgraded me to the new version last summer, and I still feel like a complete moron trying to figure out how to do things I used to be able to do with my eyes closed...
ReplyDeleteI really love those pants! Wide legs are so hot right now.

Oh. My. Goodness. That's SO dumb!! How can they possibly consider those test results when looking you over as a candidate?!? UGH!! I'm sorry. =/
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you feel any better about not working, at least your not working for an idiot that thinks so highly of himself and so little of you that he asks you to type of his kid's paper. It's so insulting that he'd ask me that!
I love you in those wide legged pants!! And that bolero jacket for 8 bucks is just awesome!
I was getting so annoyed just reading this! Well, not your post but that unfortunate testing experience! :( So sorry...hope they won't be foolish enough to grade your expertise on an out-of-date system! Ugh!!
ReplyDeleteHowever, you're rockin' this look. So take that, crazy employer! :)
WOW I am so sorry about the job. That sounds incredibly dumb, irrevelant and unfair. Who uses Microsoft from a decade ago anyways? Especially nowadays when technology moves 100 miles per second.
ReplyDeleteBut I do love your polished, classy outfit you wore to the interview. The Limited has great shells and tops to wear under blazers & suits. Those suede pumps are both classic and look comfy.
As far as the hair goes, I like the brown or the blonde on you. I hate the blah stage too. I say go back to blonde since the weather is warming up and summer will be here soon. =)
Take Care, Ada.
Taylor I'd be pissed. In fact, its not me and I am pissed off because it IS so unfair.
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth you looked really nice.
Oh, man, Taylor...that sucks. And is totally unfair, and I'm glad I read ahead to see that you contacted the company about it. That just seems like the dumbest way to assess someone...
ReplyDeleteBut (because I can't NOT comment on it...), I absolutely adore this outfit. The proportion of the pants and jacket, and the color of that top...it's all so GORGEOUS! Love it :)
